BREAKIN’ ON THE ONE WAS DEVELOPED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH AND PRODUCED BY ESPN FILMS
BREAKIN’ ON THE ONE, developed in partnership with and produced by ESPN Films, made its debut today with a trailer from Andscape, the Black content studio under Disney and ESPN. Directed by JamsBash, known for "Pause with Sam Jay" and "The Day Ones", the documentary traces a pivotal moment in 1981 New York City when the Rocksteady Crew and the Dynamic Rockers ignited a breaking battle at Lincoln Center’s Out-of-Doors Festival.
This showdown marked a seminal moment in American culture, resonating through hip hop, dance, race, and politics. Through archival footage and interviews, the film chronicles how breaking evolved from an urban niche to a global Olympic sport. It celebrates the cultural impact of pioneers from marginalized communities, shaping sports and entertainment over the past half-century.
"Ahead of its Olympic debut this summer, we're excited to share the story of break dancing," said Jason Aidoo, VP and head of Andscape. Directors JamsBash expressed enthusiasm, highlighting the origin's celebration and collaboration with Andscape.
"'Breakin’ On the One' celebrates a community that revolutionized dance," said Marsha Cooke, VP of ESPN Films, emphasizing the film's global reach.
Directed by JamsBash and executive produced by a team including Jason Aidoo and Marsha Cooke, the documentary is set to premiere on Hulu on June 24, 2024.
