AN INTERVIEW WITH DJ BRO-RABB

Fuzionz Magazine and TV stepped into the world of DJ Bro-Rabb. The North Carolina native has DJed behind artists such as Special Ed, KRS-One and Big Daddy Kane. He has also opened shows for countless other artists in the industry.

In a recent interview, the renowned DJ talked to us about his career as a DJ and how he became the DJ for KID N PLAY.

Interview:

Angela: At what age did you start your DJ career?

DJ Bro-Rabb: Age 14

Angela: How did your family feel when you told them being a DJ was going to be your career?

DJ Bro-Rabb: Well, I never expected DJing would be my career, but I think my parents knew I wanted to do something in music cause that was the only thing I should any real interest in!! DJing was just something I always wanted to do since I was a kid, but I never thought I could make a living or career out of it until my friends starting getting in my ear saying that I could make a living DJing...

Angela: What DJ's do you look up too?

DJ Bro-Rabb: The main DJs I always looked up too were a lot of the DJs from my area (DURHAM NC)...On a major level, KID CAPRI, JAZZY JEFF, RON G, GRANDMASTER FLASH, CASH MONEY, MISTER MIXX, MAGIC MIKE are some of DJs I looked up to coming up.

Angela: How does it feel working for Kid & Play, and how long have you been a DJ for them?

DJ Bro-Rabb: Working with KID N PLAY is a wonderful experience...I met PLAY years ago while he was living in DURHAM...PLAY worked on a project/documentary with my crew THE BUTTA TEAM called WELCOME 2 DURHAM...From there, I started doing mixes for PLAY's online site BRAND NEWZ..I helped out with PLAY & 9th WONDER hip hop class at North Carolina Central University as well...PLAY & I just developed a close friendship...I met KID & DJ WIZ (Kid n play's original DJ) when KID N PLAY was scheduled to perform in RALEIGH NC a few years ago! KID N PLAY always valued my opinion & input…They hired me full time when the I LOVE THE 90s started!! The tour actually started in February 2016 & I joined them in early March…

Angela: Besides Kid & Play have you ever been a DJ for any other artist/artists out there?

DJ Bro-Rabb: Well, I've DJed behind SPECIAL ED, KRS-ONE, BIG DADDY KANE & opened shows for countless other artist...Too many to name lol

Angela: How was Phillip as a youngster? How was life like growing up in North Carolina?

DJ Bro-Rabb: Growing up in Durham, NC was great for me, I have no complaints at all...Both of my parents were entrepreneurs & they worked very hard to provide for my older sister & myself...In school, I wasn't a star athlete (played basketball & ran track lol), I wasn't the dude all the girls ran after, I wasn't the brainy nerd either...The one thing I've always had over EVERYBODY was, I was always 2-3 steps ahead of everybody musically...I was always able to tell you what the next big thing was gonna be or what artist(s) was gonna be next to blow up!! I was into hearing WHOLE ALBUMS...Everybody would be buzzing over the radio/video hit...I would be that dude that would go get the ALBUM so I could hear what else the artist(s) had...I remember I used to get teased by my friends (in a good way) for having certain albums lol...I'm such a record junkie, always have been!!!

Angela: What has been the craziest experience you had on tour with the I Love The 90's tour?

DJ Bro-Rabb: HA!!! I would say one of the craziest experiences on the tour so far was when we played a date in Tucson AZ...KID & I along w/ Tone Loc & some of the other guys working with us on the tour decide to go to a club which was inside a casino...It took us about 45 minutes to get from the front door to the back of the casino where the club was at...Women were losing their minds lol...wanting to takes pictures, hugs, etc...PLAY wasn't with us...I remember, some people thought I was PLAY smh lol...I just said, "nah, I'm not PLAY…I'm DJ BRO-RABB, I was the DJ rockin’ for Kid N Play on stage"…I still got a little love so it was all good lol...

Angela: How do you feel about today's music?

DJ Bro-Rabb: There is a lot music I like that’s out right now and then there is music I don’t care too much for lol. As a very well rounded DJ, I’ve never let my personal feelings towards certain songs get in the way while I’m working lol…

Angela: What words would you have someone who wants to become a DJ?

DJ Bro-Rabb: LEARN THE HISTORY OF THE CRAFT…Learn about different types of music…Learn about RECORDS!! Learn about how we got to using Computers, CDJs, Controllers, SERATO, etc….Study the EVOLUTION of the DJ…

Angela: Is there anything else you would love to share with Fuzionz Magazine before you go Phillip?

DJ Bro-Rabb: People, for years, have asked me about my name BRO-RABB…RABB is Hebrew for MASTER/TEACHER… BRO is pretty much self-explanatory lol…
